Paraguay, one of 12 countries that recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state, has reaffirmed its commitment to the island nation amid growing pressure from China.
Foreign Minister Ruben Dario Ramirez Lezcano said his country has no plans to break diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favor of China. Paraguay’s decision comes as China seeks to expand its influence in South America and strengthen its trade relationships with countries in the region.
Ramirez Lezcano emphasized that Paraguay’s relationship with Taiwan is not dependent on any external factors, including the US. He also announced plans to sign a visa-free agreement for citizens and explore investment opportunities in Taiwan.
The move marks a significant stand against China’s campaign to isolate Taiwan diplomatically. Last year, Honduras cut ties with Taiwan following pressure from Beijing. Paraguay’s decision highlights the country’s determination to maintain its relationship with Taiwan despite economic interests that may favor China.
With Paraguay, Taiwan has secured another vital ally in its efforts to resist China’s diplomatic isolation. The move also underscores the importance of maintaining strong ties between the two nations, particularly in areas such as trade and investment.
