The back-to-school season has arrived, but many parents are struggling to balance their finances. A recent survey by Intuit Credit Karma found that over half of parents are sacrificing essential spending to afford luxury items for their children.
Social media trends, such as viral backpacks and water bottles, have driven up costs and influenced what kids want and need for school. Many parents are using smart spending strategies, including coupons, discount stores, and buy now, pay later options, to manage expenses.
The survey revealed that 45% of parents said they can’t afford to put their children in sports or after-school programs, while 32% considered leaving a job or reducing work hours to handle childcare. About 40% of families started the shopping season with no savings.
Parents are finding ways to save money, such as hunting for sales, making careful decisions, and shopping at discount stores. The survey found that 69% of families hunted for sales, while 54% started early to avoid potential supply hikes or shortages caused by tariffs.
The most expensive items on kids’ wish lists include designer sneakers (55%), water bottles ($30-$45), electronics (43%), and viral bag charms like Labubu dolls (32%). However, many parents are finding alternative options, such as knockoff versions of trendy items, which can be more affordable.
Experts warn that back-to-school shopping can be a significant financial burden on families. To avoid relying on high-interest debt, setting aside a small amount in advance can help prevent the need for expensive credit. Parents should also have an open conversation with their kids about budgeting and prioritizing needs over wants.
