A coordinated overnight attack targeted Paris’s Holocaust memorial, two synagogues, and a Jewish restaurant with green paint, prompting widespread condemnation from French authorities. The incident has added to concerns over rising anti-Semitic attacks in France since the Gaza war began on October 7, 2023.
French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau expressed outrage at the vandalism, calling it “heinous” and stating that anti-Semitism has no place in the country. He recently ordered increased security measures for Jewish-linked sites ahead of the upcoming Shavuot holiday.
The French Jewish community, which is one of the largest in the world, has been on edge due to a surge in attacks and desecrations of memorials since the conflict started. The city’s mayor, Anne Hidalgo, condemned the act of intimidation, stating that Paris authorities will lodge a complaint over the incident.
In May 2024, similar graffiti was painted beneath the memorial wall in central Paris honouring individuals who saved Jews from persecution during World War II.
