PA Department of Agriculture announced Monday that a commercial flock of 50,000 birds was found dead due to bird flu near Lynn Township, Lehigh County. The department is quarantining the affected farm and surrounding areas within a 6-mile radius to prevent further spread of the virus. Neighbors, like Sandy Kantor, expressed concerns about potential risks to their pets and nearby poultry farms. Kantor noted that the owners built the farm five years ago but do not have experience with such an outbreak. State Secretary Russell Redding emphasized the importance of bio-security measures, including wearing different shoes in and out of the poultry house, to protect workers from the virus. David Jaindl of Jaindl Farms stated that despite being outside the quarantine zone, precautionary measures have increased, and they no longer hold meetings at the farm. The department will continue to monitor the situation and work toward allowing birds back into production after proper disinfection and recovery.
