Former Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald is reportedly eager to return to coaching, following the settlement of a $130 million lawsuit against him. ESPN’s Pete Thamel claims that Fitzgerald wants to get back onto the sidelines and believes he’ll be a top candidate for head coaching openings this fall.
Fitzgerald was fired in July 2023 after allegations of hazing surfaced within the program. However, he has maintained a lower profile since then, coaching locally for his son’s high school team outside of Chicago. Industry experts believe that Fitzgerald’s experience and success – including 17 years as a head coach – will make him an attractive candidate for top programs.
Thamel notes that Fitzgerald has already begun building interest with search firms and may receive job offers sooner than expected. With the growing trend of schools moving on coaches early to build their rosters, Fitzgerald’s reputation and credentials could make him a prime target for several teams.
