New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel was treated for a bloody cheek after jumping into a pile of players during practice with the Washington Commanders on Wednesday. The incident showed Vrabel’s commitment to intensity and physicality, values he instills in his team.
According to quarterback Drake Maye, Vrabel’s willingness to engage in physical play sets an example for the team. “That’s what we’re trying to build,” Maye said. “Intensity, bringing it every day, taking no crap when we’re out there on the field.”
Tight end Hunter Henry praised Vrabel’s sense of humor and willingness to connect with his players. The coach even joked about being featured in practice footage.
Veteran offensive tackle Morgan Moses called Vrabel a “players’ coach” due to his background as an outside linebacker with multiple NFL teams. He added that Vrabel’s passion for the game is contagious, making players want to work harder.
The Patriots will host the Commanders in their preseason opener on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
