The New England Patriots’ defense made a strong impression during their first joint practice with the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday. The unit, led by linebacker Robert Spillane, demonstrated its ability to pressure the quarterback and provide quality coverage.
Milton Williams set the tone early, recording a would-be sack in the first 11-on-11 period. K’Lavon Chaisson and Christian Ellis also made notable plays, with Chaisson blowing up a toss sweep and Ellis stopping a run for a loss. Harold Landry added to the pressure, tapping off quarterback J.J. McCarthy for a sack.
Spillane praised his teammates’ energy and focus, saying that joint practices are about growth and learning. “It’s another day at work,” he said. “We got better today.” Chaisson echoed Spillane’s sentiments, highlighting the defensive front’s coordination and communication.
The Patriots defense also showed its ability to contain Minnesota’s top players. Cornerback Carlton Davis played physical and maintained the standard, while Jabrill Peppers delivered a standout play with a diving breakup on a deep shot.
Despite missing two key players – Christian Barmore and Christian Gonzalez – the Patriots looked fast and physical. The defense ultimately forced a field goal attempt from the Vikings in a simulated two-minute drill, capping off a strong day.
Thursday’s second joint practice will give the Patriots another chance to build momentum on defense.
