Patriots Hold First Summer Practice, Initial Impressions from Drills

The New England Patriots gathered for their first summer practice on Wednesday, marking the start of the highly anticipated training camp season. Under head coach Mike Vrabel’s guidance, the team focused on playing fast and with urgency, efficiency, and energy.

Quarterback Drake Maye led the team with an 8-of-9 performance in competitive 11-on-11 periods, showcasing his accuracy and decision-making skills. Stefon Diggs continued to show no rust after his ACL tear, catching multiple passes from Maye. Rookie receiver Kyle Williams matched Diggs’ two catches, while a little-known cornerback reeled in the first interception of the summer.

Other notable observations included rookie O-lineman Will Campbell being beaten for a sack and TreVeyon Henderson taking most of his snaps with the second-team offense. The team’s veteran cornerbacks, Carlton Davis and Christian Gonzalez, also made appearances, as did defensive linemen Milton Williams and Keion White.

The practice saw several players struggling, including backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs, who had sporadic accuracy issues. Tight end Hunter Henry snagged a long pass from Maye, but the lack of depth at tight end remains a concern if injuries occur during the season.

As training camp progresses, fans will have the opportunity to witness more of these young players and see how they develop. The Patriots’ emphasis on speed and energy is promising, and with a few notable signings in the offseason, this team could be poised for a strong season.
