Patriots’ Post-Preseason Reality Check

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel’s first preseason games have delivered mixed results. The team started strong, with a joint practice with the Washington Commanders and a 48-18 win in their preseason opener, but recent performances have been less impressive. In a joint practice with the Minnesota Vikings, the Patriots were dominated on defense, while the Drake Maye-led offense struggled to move the ball against the backups.

Vrabel has acknowledged that the team still has work to do, particularly in terms of consistency on the defense. He noted that “there’s going to be some back and forth” during games, but emphasized the importance of responding well when taking shots.

Injuries have also affected the team, with Ja’Lynn Polk (shoulder surgery) and Marcellas Dial Jr. (ACL tear) already on injured reserve. The Patriots’ draft class has seen significant losses, with guard Layden Robinson and receiver Javon Baker struggling to build momentum.

Despite these challenges, Vrabel’s vision for the team is clear, and the personnel department has delivered results this preseason. However, there are still areas where the team needs to improve, particularly in terms of depth.

The Patriots will be adding a third quarterback to their roster, via either the 53-man roster or practice squad. Tommy DeVito from the Giants could be one of the options for the third-string role.

Other storylines include Kyle Dugger’s comeback from ankle surgery and his status on the team, as well as the potential return of veteran receiver Kendrick Bourne. The Patriots’ kicking situation is also being evaluated, with Andy Borregales emerging as a possible favorite to handle duties after missing a 49-yard field goal in the preseason finale.

The team will be finalizing their 53-man roster soon, and fans will be eager to see if they can address some of the concerns highlighted by Vrabel.
