Three-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone has issued a formal apology after hundreds of Broadway performers signed an open letter condemning her comments about fellow actors Kecia Lewis and Audra McDonald. The letter, dated May 30, was addressed to the American Theatre Wing and called for accountability for “violent, disrespectful, or harmful behavior” in the industry.
In her apology, LuPone acknowledged that her remarks were “inappropriate” and vowed to make amends. She expressed regret over her flippant responses during an interview with The New Yorker, which she said offended others and ran counter to the values of the theatre community.
LuPone’s issues with Lewis appear to have started last fall when she starred in a show next door to “Hell’s Kitchen,” a musical inspired by Alicia Keys’ life. Lewis had complained about noise complaints made by LuPone, leading to changes that negatively impacted the show and its performers.
The situation escalated after LuPone appeared to mock Lewis on social media, saying “Don’t call yourself a vet, bitch.” Lewis responded, calling LuPone’s behavior degrading, misogynistic, and racially insensitive. The New Yorker published an interview with LuPone in which she seemed to downplay the issue, saying that similar behavior was common on Broadway.
However, the open letter signed by over 500 Broadway performers painted a different picture. They described LuPone’s comments as bullying, harassment, and microaggressions. The letter also criticized LuPone’s remarks about Lewis’ experience and her claim to be a veteran performer.
The situation has sparked a wider conversation about accountability and respect in the theatre industry. Audra McDonald, who appeared to support Lewis, expressed surprise at LuPone’s behavior and said she didn’t know why they had issues in the past.
LuPone has committed to making amends and speaking with Lewis and McDonald personally. The Tony Awards are set to air on June 8, with McDonald potentially adding her seventh win for her upcoming performance.
