Patti LuPone Apologizes for Criticism of Audra McDonald and Kecia Lewis

Broadway legend Patti LuPone has issued a formal apology for comments she made about fellow performers Audra McDonald and Kecia Lewis in a recent interview. The remarks, which included calling Lewis a “bitch” and questioning her credentials as a Broadway veteran, have sparked outrage within the theater community.

Over 500 artists, including Tony winners James Monroe Iglehart and J. Harrison Ghee, signed an open letter criticizing LuPone’s comments, labeling them “degrading and misogynistic.” McDonald took to CBS Sunday Morning to express her surprise at the rift between them, stating that she hadn’t seen LuPone in 11 years.

LuPone later posted on Instagram, expressing remorse for her behavior and committing to making amends. She acknowledged that her comments were “inappropriate” and “devastating” to others, and agreed with an open letter that highlighted the importance of lifting each other up within the theater community.

The controversy highlights a long-standing feud between LuPone and Andrew Lloyd Webber, as well as her past criticism of Madonna. However, it appears that this incident may be an opportunity for LuPone to reflect on her actions and work towards reconciliation with those she has hurt.
