Patti LuPone Apologizes for Criticism of Kecia Lewis and Audra McDonald

Three-time Tony-winning actress Patti LuPone has apologized for her criticism of fellow performers Kecia Lewis and Audra McDonald in an interview with The New Yorker. LuPone, known for her outspoken nature on Broadway, used the word “bitch” to describe Lewis and called McDonald “not a friend.” Her comments prompted a backlash from colleagues and led to an open letter criticizing her conduct.

In response, LuPone issued a 163-word statement apologizing for her words, calling them “demeaned and disrespectful” towards Lewis. She expressed regret for her behavior and acknowledged that it ran counter to the values of the theater community. LuPone also praised The New Yorker’s article, stating she “wholeheartedly agree[s] with everything” written about her conduct.

The apology comes after an incident last year when LuPone became concerned about noise levels at a theater where both “Hell’s Kitchen” and “The Roommate” were running. She had sent flowers to the sound crew at “Hell’s Kitchen,” but Lewis posted a video calling LuPone’s actions “racially microaggressive.” McDonald supported Lewis, saying there was no rift between them.

LuPone has previously been known for her candor, but this apology marks an unusual move in her career.
