Law firm Paul, Weiss has reached a deal with President Trump over an executive order that targeted the firm as part of his retribution campaign. The agreement comes after a face-to-face meeting between Paul Weiss Chairman Brad Karp and Mr. Trump in which Karp acknowledged “wrongdoing” by former partner Mark F. Pomerantz.
Under the terms of the deal, Paul Weiss agreed to represent clients regardless of their political affiliation and contributed $40 million in legal services to causes championed by Mr. Trump, including combating antisemitism and veterans’ issues. The firm also agreed to conduct an audit on its hiring practices to ensure they are merit-based.
The agreement is seen as a significant development in President Trump’s retribution campaign against top law firms that have supported his opponents or unfairly prosecuted him. It follows a series of moves by companies that found themselves at odds with Mr. Trump, including Meta and ABC News agreeing to pay settlements to settle lawsuits filed by the former president.
The deal also comes after a federal judge ruled that another executive order targeting Perkins Coie was likely unconstitutional and issued a restraining order halting it. However, President Trump signed a nearly identical executive order against Paul Weiss two days later, prompting the firm’s lawyers to seek representation from Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan.
