Peacemaker’s DC Universe Retcon Explained by James Gunn

James Gunn’s 2022 series Peacemaker has sparked a debate among fans about its place in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The show originally featured a cameo from the Snyder-era Justice League, including Superman and Wonder Woman. However, this continuity is no longer considered part of the new DCU.

The upcoming season 2 of Peacemaker will address this inconsistency by retconning the cameo out of existence. In episode 1, Gunn plays the role of memory-holing the Snyderverse version, presenting a new scene where Guy Gardner (John Cena) and Rick Flag (Steve Agee) are shown to have a strained relationship due to a past incident.

In an interview on Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, Gunn explained that while some changes will be small, such as removing non-canonical elements like Bat-Mite or Green Arrow, the Justice League cameo is not consistent with the new continuity. This led to the introduction of a new scene where Guy complains about Peacemaker’s past behavior, which shares a similar tone and style with the original show.

Gunn has stated that he wants to maintain the transgressive and sexual undertones of the series while introducing a new character. The retconning of the Snyderverse cameo allows Gunn to refresh the show’s continuity without contradicting existing canon, ensuring that Peacemaker remains part of the new DCU.
