The second full moon of 2025, known as the “snow moon,” will reach its peak this week. Named after winter’s heavy snowfall, it coincides with a series of back-to-back snowstorms affecting much of the United States.
According to earthsky.org, the snow moon will be at its highest point in the sky around midnight on Wednesday, but can be viewed as early as Tuesday or Wednesday night under optimal conditions. Stargazing in areas with less light pollution is recommended for a full appreciation of the moon’s beauty.
The term “snow moon” originated from the traditional tracking of time by Native American tribes through lunar phases. It refers to the heavy snow that falls during the winter season and also the difficult hunting conditions it brings, earning an alternative name as the “Hunger Moon.”
This full moon is followed by the “worm moon,” which will occur in mid-March. Meanwhile, Venus, named after the Roman goddess of love, will reach peak brightness on February 14.
