A family in the Pearl Harbor area has confirmed that two ducks they recently adopted have tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza, also known as H5N1. The two infected ducks were euthanized, along with seven other ducks on their property, which were put down due to possible exposure.
The Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) reported the incident, which is one of several backyard flock outbreaks currently affecting Oahu. Another infected flock was confirmed on November 15 involving 70 birds, while a nine-bird outbreak was detected on November 18.
Additionally, a wild duck at James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge in Kahuku tested positive for H5N1 last month, but showed no symptoms. Meanwhile, tests conducted after reports of dead zebra doves on a Kaimuki property yielded negative results for the virus.
Hawaii residents are advised to report sick or dead birds to the HDOA at 808-483-7102 (business hours) or 808-837-8092 (after business hours).
