Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament joined Metallica on stage for the first time last night, December 13, at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles, during the band’s annual Helping Hands benefit. This rare collaboration took place during the metal legends’ 13-song, two-set performance.
The evening began with an acoustic set featuring guest turns from SistaStrings and local San Francisco musicians Avi Vinocur and Henry Salvia. They performed unique tracks, including a first appearance since 1998 of “Low Man’s Lyric” and a live debut of Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s “Away From Home”.
Before closing their second set with “Master of Puppets”, Metallica also revisited “The Unforgiven II” for the first time in five years. The show, hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel, featured Sammy Hagar on vocals, backed by Michael Anthony, Kenny Aronoff, and Joe Satriani.
The Helping Hands benefit supports Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation, which aims to improve the lives of people who have supported the band, as well as encourage fan participation. The full show will premiere on YouTube on December 19.
