Penguins Contribute to Cloud Formation in Antarctica

Scientists have discovered a surprising link between penguin colonies and cloud formation in Antarctica. Ammonia from penguin droppings helps boost the growth of clouds, which reflect sunlight and cool the surface.

Research by Matthew Boyer at the University of Helsinki found that high concentrations of ammonia accelerate the formation of cloud clusters. But how does this occur in Antarctica’s pristine environment? The answer lies with penguins, which produce a rich source of ammonia through their droppings. A study measured air quality around a large AdĂ©lie penguin colony and found high levels of ammonia, sulphuric acid, and particles.

“We smell terrible,” says Boyer, describing the penguins’ emissions. By studying this connection, scientists have gained insights into the intricate relationships between ecosystems and atmospheric processes.
