Penguins Place Malkin on IR with Upper-Body Injury

Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin was placed on injured reserve Sunday due to an upper-body injury, marking his fourth consecutive game absence from the team. The move is procedural to activate forward Philip Tomasino from injured reserve.

Coach Mike Sullivan confirmed that Malkin’s status is day-to-day despite being out of action for over a month. Prior to the injury, Malkin had a 209-game streak, which ranks as the 12th longest in team history. During his current absence, Pittsburgh has gone 1-1-1.

Malkin scored his 500th goal and reached 1,300 NHL points earlier this season, with eight goals and 24 assists in 41 games to date. His linemate Michael Bunting was also involved in a car accident outside the arena before the game against Tampa Bay, but is reported to be okay and will not play.
