Penn Badgley has expressed his readiness to leave the hit Netflix series “You” after five seasons. In an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, he revealed that playing the dark character Joe Goldberg was a defining experience of his 30s.
Badgley said he’s happy with how the show ends, describing it as a deconstruction of the character. The final season sees Joe incarcerated after his crimes catch up to him and a physical altercation with his love interest Bronte. Badgley admitted that the physical toll of playing Joe came to a head during the final sequence.
“I couldn’t manipulate my performance,” he said, explaining that his body was giving out due to eight years of playing the intense character. The actor acknowledged that he’s ready to move on and distance himself from the role.
Badgley stated that playing Joe has taught him about what it means to be a man, beyond obvious lessons like not committing murder. He’ll conclude his portrayal as Joe at 40, marking the end of an era for the character.
