Penn State Coach Franklin Pledges Team Unity After Big Ten Championship Loss

Penn State coach James Franklin expressed confidence in his team’s playoff prospects after a 45-37 loss to Oregon in the Big Ten Championship Game. The Nittany Lions, who trailed by one possession, will host their first-round playoff game at Beaver Stadium on Dec. 20 or 21.

Franklin praised his team’s resilience and unity, saying that despite losing to the top-ranked team in the country, “our resumé matches up with anybody in the country.” He pointed to earlier losses to the No. 3 team in the country, also by one possession, as evidence of his team’s strength.

Oregon coach Dan Lanning echoed Franklin’s sentiments, praising his team’s performance and the “belief” that never wavered throughout the game. Lanning highlighted quarterback Dillon Gabriel’s poise and leader, receiver Tez Johnson’s electrifying play, and the entire team’s dedication to one another.

Lanning also acknowledged Phil Knight’s philanthropic contributions to the university and the athletic program, saying that his presence “means the world” to Oregon athletics. The coach praised the school’s football tradition, citing its significance without Knight.

Franklin acknowledged that there is room for improvement but emphasized the team’s growth potential and enthusiasm for the upcoming playoff game.
