Senator Angus King pressed President Donald Trump’s nominee for the top policy job at the Pentagon, Elbridge Colby, during a confirmation hearing on Tuesday about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While Colby agreed that it is a “factual reality” that Russian troops crossed the border in 2022 and invaded Ukraine, he declined to directly answer if Russia was responsible for starting the war.
King questioned why Colby wouldn’t say the truth about the situation, pointing out that it’s not a secret and would be in line with his promise to tell “the truth to power.” Colby responded by saying diplomacy is key during a delicate period where he hopes things will get back on track towards peace.
Maine Representative Jared Golden also weighed in on the conflict, stating that if Ukrainians still have the will to fight, no one can force a peace deal they don’t like. However, if peace is on the table, President Zelenskyy should take action to strengthen his hand in negotiations.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing for over three years.
