A journalist has been evicted from their 18-year-old workplace at the US Pentagon, but they won’t give up on covering national security. As a building police officer and unofficial greeter, one employee, Jimmy, has seen it all.
Jimmy, who served in the Marines before joining the Pentagon, was present when a suicide bombing killed 13 troops outside Kabul airport in 2021. He remembered a medic from the Navy, who had been assigned to provide medical support to the unit.
For nearly two decades, Jimmy stood guard beside mosaics showing the faces of the 3,000 victims of the 9/11 attacks. The displays were removed during the pandemic, symbolizing the country’s move away from the War on Terror and towards new threats.
As President Donald Trump told troops that the enemy is “the enemy within,” Jimmy’s experience serves as a reminder of the ongoing security challenges facing the US. Despite his eviction, Jimmy will continue to do his job, providing a unique perspective on national security issues.
