PepsiCo has acquired the prebiotic soda brand Poppi for $1.95 billion. The deal is seen as an effort by the company to cater to consumers’ growing interest in health and wellness.
Poppi’s co-founder, Allison Ellsworth, expressed her excitement about joining PepsiCo, stating that it will allow the drinks to reach more customers while preserving their unique qualities. Ellsworth developed Poppi in 2015 after discovering a soda that made her feel unwell due to its ingredients.
However, the brand recently faced a lawsuit claiming that Poppi does not contain enough prebiotic fiber to provide meaningful gut health benefits. The complaint alleged that drinking four cans of Poppi would be necessary for noticeable health effects.
