PepsiCo to Remove Artificial Colors from Products Amid FDA Ban

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has called for a ban on artificial ingredients, prompting PepsiCo to take action. The company’s CEO, Ramon Laguarta, stated during an April 24 conference call that the company will reduce artificial ingredients and has already started doing so.

Laguarta reported that sixty percent of PepsiCo’s portfolio does not contain artificial colors, and the company is “undergoing a transition.” Specific products like Lay’s and Tostitos are expected to be free from artificial colors by the end of this year.

The FDA announced last Tuesday a ban on petroleum-based synthetic dyes in America’s food supply. The plan includes establishing a national standard and timeline for the industry to switch to natural alternatives, as well as initiating the process to revoke authorization for certain synthetic food colorings within the coming months.

Certified nutritionist Liana Werner-Gray praised the move, saying it is a “huge win for public health and long overdue.” She attributes her own recovery from cancer symptoms after removing artificial dyes from her diet to the decision.
