Perplexity and ChatGPT are two popular AI Q&A tools competing for the top spot. While both offer unique features, their performance varies in different tests. We put them head-to-head to see which one comes out on top.
ChatGPT, launched in 2022, uses OpenAI’s GPT family of large language models, including newer models like o1. Perplexity, on the other hand, is not affiliated with LLM development and can tap into various AI tools, including Claude, Grok, and Llama LLMs.
In our tests, we crafted five unique prompts: a factual explanation, a mathematical equation, advice for a broader request, an open-ended request, and creativity. The results were mixed, but ChatGPT outperformed Perplexity in terms of accuracy, detail, and realism.
However, Perplexity excelled in citing sources for free subscribers, offering valuable information without paid upgrades. It also developed its own in-house models, showcasing adaptability.
While both chatbots have their strengths and weaknesses, ChatGPT’s overall performance makes it the top choice for now. Nevertheless, Perplexity’s flexibility and free source citation make it a solid alternative.
