The Perseid meteor shower is expected to reach its peak on August 13th, with the radiant located at 02:22 (036) +56. This shower is active from July 17 through August 29 and produces meteors of swift velocity. The estimated hourly rates for evening observers should be near 4 as seen from mid-northern latitudes (45N), while morning observers can expect rates of up to 21.
The August beta Piscids and Southern delta Aquariids are other active showers, with their radiant located at 22:36 (339) -02 and 22:51 (343) -16 respectively. The Perseid meteor shower is visible from the northern hemisphere, while these two showers have limited visibility due to moonlight.
Meteor activity in the southern hemisphere is declining rapidly, with meteors less than double the rates seen three months ago. Observers should note that sporadic meteors make up the bulk of the activity during this period.
The Perseid meteor shower is best viewed during the last dark hour before dawn when the radiant lies highest above the northeastern horizon in a dark sky. The position of the radiant and hourly rate can be found on the NASA Meteor Shower Portal, which also provides information on other active showers beyond the limits of visual observing.
