San Diego County residents can witness the annual Perseid meteor shower from August 12-13, but optimal viewing conditions will be limited due to moon illumination and light pollution. The peak hours are expected late on August 12 and early on August 13, with a visibility issue caused by nearly 84% of the moon’s illuminated surface.
To increase chances of spotting meteors, head east of Interstate 15 towards the foothills, mountains, or deserts, where sky conditions will be clearer. The viewing period is usually from midnight to before dawn, but allow 20-30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to darkness.
Due to light pollution in coastal areas and an expected marine layer up to 700 feet deep, spotting meteors may be challenging. Comet Swift-Tuttle’s debris entering the atmosphere creates visible meteors during this event.
