Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight with Bright Moon

The Perseid meteor shower peaks on August 12-13, 2025, offering a rare opportunity to witness the celestial spectacle. Although a bright gibbous Moon will dominate the sky, observers can still spot a few meteors by finding a comfortable spot outdoors.

The radiant of the shower is located in the constellation Perseus, where meteors originate from but are visible across the entire sky. The best viewing times are after sunset and before the Moon rises at 11pm, or between 2am and dawn on August 13th. To enhance visibility, face north and position the Moon behind you during these periods.

The cause of the Perseid meteor shower lies in debris shed from Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle as it crossed Earth’s orbital path. As our planet traverses this section of its orbit every August, we are treated to a spectacular display of meteors. The bright flashes of light seen during the shower result from shock waves created by the compressing air in front of the debris as they enter our atmosphere.
