Perseid Meteor Shower to Be Disrupted by Full Moon

The Perseid meteor shower, one of the most popular displays of shooting stars, will be significantly reduced due to a near-full moon in the sky, experts warn. The show typically peaks from August 12-13 but will be impacted by the sturgeon moon’s brightness, which will wash out most meteors.

The American Meteor Society predicts that the Perseids will display only 12-18 shooting stars per hour on the peak night, a decline of at least 75% due to the moon’s interference. NASA agrees, stating that the full moon will make it difficult to see all but the brightest meteors.

However, there is some positive news for stargazers. The Geminid meteor shower, which takes place in December, will offer Moon-free viewing and potentially produce up to 150 shooting stars per hour during its peak, occurring on December 13-14. This year’s Perseids may not live up to expectations, but the Geminids are poised to deliver a spectacular display later this year.
