Perseid Meteor Shower to Peak Despite Bright Moon

The Perseid meteor shower, considered one of the best in the sky, is set to peak next week, but a bright moon may negatively impact visibility. The peak is expected on August 12-13, with the full moon reaching 84% brightness at that time. According to the American Meteor Society, this will reduce activity by at least 75%. Viewers can still expect to see between 10-20 meteors per hour, significantly fewer than under darker conditions.

The Perseid meteor shower has been ongoing since mid-July and will continue until August 23. NASA advises viewing the spectacle early in the morning before sunrise, or as late as 10 p.m. The meteors appear to originate from the constellation Perseus, but actually come from space debris left by a comet.

To maximize visibility, experts recommend watching from rural areas with minimal light pollution. As the Earth passes closest to the comet’s core orbit on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, optimal viewing conditions will be present. However, even under ideal conditions, the bright moon may still reduce visibility.
