Pete Carroll, a former University of Southern California head coach, is returning to the NFL as the Las Vegas Raiders’ new head coach. The 74-year-old Carroll, who previously coached for the New York Jets (1994) and New England Patriots (1997-1999), will guide the Raiders starting in Week 2 of the upcoming NFL season.
His coaching journey includes stints with Seattle (2010-2023), where he led the franchise to multiple playoff appearances, including a Super Bowl victory in 2013. After being fired by the Seattle Seahawks following the 2023 season, Carroll transitioned back to college coaching at USC from 2001 to 2009, earning a reputation for producing top-tier athletes like Carson Palmer and Reggie Bush.
Carroll’s return to the NFL comes after the Raiders parted ways with Antonio Pierce, who led just one season before being fired. As the Raiders’ head coach for three seasons (with an option for a fourth), Carroll will become the oldest head coach in NFL history at 74 years old.
