Phil Robertson, ‘Duck Dynasty’ Star, Dies at 79 After Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

Phil Robertson, the patriarch of the Louisiana family behind Duck Commander, died on Sunday at 79. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease last December.

The Robertsons rose to fame after their reality show took off in 2012, showcasing the family duck-call business. Each episode ended with Phil praying over a meal with his extended family, including his brother Si and sons Willie, Jase, and Jep.

Robertson frequently referenced his humble roots and troubled past. The family’s show set a record at the time as the most-watched reality cable series. Robertson wrote dozens of Christian books and devotionals, sold more than a million copies, and released a Christian movie, The Blind, in 2023.

His granddaughter Sadie Robertson Huff became a major evangelical speaker and influencer after appearing on the show. She credited Phil’s testimony with changing her life and thousands of others.

Robertson was an elder at White’s Ferry Road Church and cohosted a Bible podcast, Unashamed with the Robertson Family. He spoke out politically, backing President Donald Trump, and advocated for pro-life causes.

Born in Vivian, Louisiana, Robertson grew up without electricity or indoor bathrooms. His father worked in the oil fields, leaving the family behind. Robertson struggled with addiction before finding redemption through his faith. He married Kay Carroway, whom he met while playing football, and began designing duck calls in the 1970s.

The business grew, patenting the Duck Commander in 1973. The company sold over a million calls per year after Duck Dynasty aired. Robertson credited God’s blessing for the success.

Throughout his life, Robertson remained devoted to his faith, praising Kay’s faithfulness and prayers. He continued to preach the Scriptures as a member of White’s Ferry Road Church.
