A family’s attorney has called a report by the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office “an embarrassment” after they reaffirmed that a 2011 stabbing death of a Manayunk teacher was a suicide. Ellen Greenberg, 27, was found with multiple stab wounds in her apartment on January 26, 2011. The medical examiner says Greenberg would have been capable of inflicting the injuries herself and that her anxiety over work as a teacher contributed to her decision.
The report also reveals new information about the crime scene, including DNA evidence that does not match the knife used in the attack. Greenberg’s fiancĂ© claimed he was at the gym at the time of her death, which is corroborated by surveillance video and keycard swipes. The medical examiner notes that while some wounds are unusual, they do not suggest an intruder or struggle.
The family has been seeking justice for over 14 years after a settlement between Greenberg’s family and the City of Philadelphia. However, Dr. Lindsay Simon, the chief medical examiner, says the report provides no evidence to change the original ruling. The attorney for the family disagrees, saying the report is flawed and ignores key evidence that contradicts the suicide theory.
The controversy surrounding Greenberg’s death has led to a reexamination of her case by Hulu, which released a docuseries on the topic recently.
