The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest and charges against former President Rodrigo Duterte have sparked a mixed reaction across the country, with some Christians thanking God for justice being served, while others are divided over the ICC’s role in addressing human rights abuses.
Duterte, who ruled from 2016 to 2022, was accused of ordering the killings of thousands of people during his “war on drugs.” His supporters claimed he brought order and cleaned up crime-ridden areas, but critics argued that the war on drugs resulted in extrajudicial killings and human rights abuses.
At a church service in Quezon City, pastor Jack Alvarez expressed gratitude to God for the ICC’s actions. He attended mass with family members who lost loved ones to the war on drugs. Locals and those from out of town also came together to show support for justice being served.
On social media, some Duterte supporters blamed current President Bongbong Marcos for the arrest, fueling further division. Misinformation about Duterte’s whereabouts and false accusations have also spread, influencing public opinion.
However, not all Christians are pleased with the ICC’s actions. Some argue that the war on drugs raised moral and theological concerns, such as the sanctity of life and government accountability. Others expressed concern over politics splintering congregations.
Despite these divisions, many Filipinos continue to demand justice for the victims of the war on drugs. Alvarez emphasized the importance of caring for those affected by the conflict, stating that “there is no part of creation that is not under the lordship of Christ.”
The ICC’s decision marks an important step towards accountability for human rights abuses committed during Duterte’s presidency. As the hearing approaches in September, church leaders are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize justice over politics.
In related news, Duterte appeared in court on March 14, as his hearing is set to begin on September 23. The court’s decision will bring closure to thousands of families who have been waiting for answers about their loved ones’ fate during the war on drugs.
The Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches and other organizations are calling on church leaders to remain united in demanding justice and accountability, rather than letting politics divide them.
