Last night’s performance by Phish at Madison Square Garden marked the third show in their highly-anticipated four-night New Year’s Eve residency. The jam band quartet, now in its 17th year, delivered a masterful set that exceeded expectations and proved to be a fitting finale for their musical achievement.
The show began with an energetic rendition of “Possum,” followed by the laid-back funk of “Wolfman’s Brother.” Drummer Jon Fishman made his first live appearance of “Lengthwise” since July 2019, which he seamlessly blended into “Maze.”
Phish then transitioned into a soaring “Divided Sky,” bringing the crowd to its feet with a minute-long pause. The band’s familiarity with their New York audience shone through in this classic song.
Keyboardist Page McConnell kicked off the second half of the set with the epic “Most Events Aren’t Planned.” Anastasio thanked the audience before launching into “Fluffhead,” which closed out the first frame to perfection.
The group returned for the second set, opening with the moody “Hey Stranger” and followed by a 20-minute jam on “Down With Disease.” Phish then segued into a series of high-energy songs, including “Tweezer,” “Seven Below,” and “Piper.”
The show closed out with an exuberant performance of “Everything’s Right” before returning to the stage for the encore, which included “A Life Beyond The Dream” and “Harry Hood.” Bassist Mike Gordon even brought out a inflatable dreidel during “Harry Hood,” adding a playful touch to the performance.
With this show, Phish continued to honor an incredible year of performance and raise the stakes for tonight’s big finish.
