The Phoenix Suns’ struggles continued on Sunday night as they fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves 116-98 in a dominating performance by the visitors. All-Star forward Kevin Durant expressed disappointment and frustration with his team’s performance, stating that they “embarrassed the fans and ourselves.”
With the loss, Phoenix drops to 28-33 and falls four games behind the Dallas Mavericks for the final spot in the Western Conference play-in tournament. The Suns are in desperate need of a turnaround, having lost 11 of their last 14 games.
Injuries have been a major factor, but even with their full roster, the Suns were unable to overcome Minnesota’s superior team effort. Led by Edwards’ 44 points and Randle’s 20 points, the Timberwolves outgained Phoenix on the glass and exploited the Suns’ defense.
Phoenix led at halftime but lost momentum in the fourth quarter, committing nine turnovers that directly led to easy baskets for Minnesota. The loss marked a season-high 22 turnovers by Phoenix and 40 points off those turnovers, which Durant blamed on his team’s inability to secure the ball.
The Suns’ struggles have been evident since an 8-1 start to the season, when they had championship aspirations with their highly-paid roster. However, after 13 November, the team has a dismal 20-31 record, and coach Mike Budenholzer urged his team to “go on a run” to change their fortunes.
