Italian designer Pierpaolo Piccioli has been appointed as the new creative director of Balenciaga, effective July 10. The 57-year-old joins a global brand with a history of innovation and a recent reputation for hype and provocation.
Piccioli, who spent 25 years at Valentino, brings his expertise in haute couture and his passion for savoir-faire to the French house. He will build on the strengths achieved by Demna under his creative direction, while maintaining the brand’s core identity and legacy.
The appointment follows a tumultuous period for Balenciaga, with Demna’s departure marked by a swan song couture collection. Piccioli has stated that he plans to honor the brand’s heritage while introducing new ideas and possibilities.
Kering CEO François-Henri Pinault welcomed Piccioli, saying that the designer was “one of the most talented and celebrated designers of today.” Deputy CEO Francesca Bellettini added that Piccioli would bring his mastery of haute couture and creative voice to the brand.
Piccioli’s appointment marks a new chapter for Balenciaga, as the brand prepares to launch fragrances and expand its retail network. With expertise in cutting-edge fashion and an understanding of the brand’s rich heritage, Piccioli is poised to lead Balenciaga into a promising future.
