This weekend’s full moon will be the smallest and faintest of the year when it peaks on April 23, 2024, at 8:22pm ET. The event is known as the Pink Moon or Paschal Moon and marks the start of Easter celebrations.
According to NASA, a micromoon appears smaller and dimmer due to its proximity to the Earth’s orbit. However, differences may be hard to notice with the naked eye. The name “Pink Moon” comes from an early spring flower native to eastern North America.
In related news, this year’s Blood Moon total lunar eclipse was visible in the US on Thursday night and Friday morning, marking the first such event since November 2022. A partial solar eclipse occurred earlier on March 29, 2025, providing a rare “double sunrise” for some regions.
