A 20-year-old fan has been identified as Kavan Markwood, a recent South Allegheny High School graduate, after falling 21 feet over the famous Clemente Wall at PNC Park during a Pittsburgh Pirates game. Markwood was in critical condition Thursday morning and had taken off his shirt to celebrate Andrew McCutchen’s double that drove in the go-ahead runs.
The fan fell from a 3-foot railing while cheering for the Pirates, who ultimately won 4-3. Witnesses described him as excited and took selfies before taking off his shirt and pouring beer on himself.
Game officials, emergency responders, and Pirates personnel were on hand to assist Markwood after he was placed on a stabilizing board and transported to Allegheny General Hospital.
The team’s chairman expressed their sadness and heartbreak over the incident, calling it “one of the most difficult moments many have ever experienced.”
