Pistorius to Meet with Ukrainian Leaders Amid US and German Shifts

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has arrived in Kyiv on Tuesday to discuss European support for Ukraine amid a looming change of government in the United States and Germany. Pistorius emphasized his commitment to actively supporting Ukraine, citing reliable and steadfast aid.

During his visit, he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and other military officials and politicians. He also participated in “Group of Five” talks with counterparts from Poland, the UK, France, Italy, and Germany to reassure Kyiv of continued European support.

Pistorius expressed optimism about ongoing efforts to agree additional Ukraine aid before February’s early election in Germany. However, he acknowledged that a 2025 budget collapse contributed to a coalition collapse in Germany and sparked a snap vote.

The German defense minister noted that despite the change in government, Germany’s approach to Ukraine is unlikely to shift significantly. Pistorius warned against reducing support for Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a free and sovereign democratic country.

Pistorius’ visit comes ahead of US President Donald Trump’s return and may be his last as defense minister, although he has expressed interest in remaining in the post in a future German government.
