A fan, identified as Kavan Markwood, was critically hurt after falling from the bleachers at PNC Park in Pittsburgh during a game between the Pirates and Cubs. The incident occurred during the seventh inning of the game on Wednesday night, and officials are treating it as accidental.
Markwood fell approximately 20 feet onto the field before being taken to emergency care. As of Thursday, he remained in critical condition according to the Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety.
A witness who was sitting next to Markwood said that he jumped up from his seat and appeared to have had his hands on the fence before falling over the railing. Pirates manager Derek Shelton also witnessed the incident and expressed his shock at how it happened, saying “it’s extremely unfortunate.”
Markwood previously attended Walsh University in Ohio and Wheeling University in West Virginia, where he was a member of the football team in 2023.
The university communities have released statements expressing their sadness and support for Markwood and his family during this difficult time. The fan is still receiving prayers from both the university communities and the public.
