Pixar’s Elio Crashes with Lowest Debut, But Other Films Soar

Disney and Pixar’s animated adventure “Elio” opened in theaters over the weekend, earning a dismal $14 million overseas and $35 million globally. This marks the worst-ever box office debut for Pixar, behind only 2023’s “Elemental”. Despite its disappointing start, “Elio” has received great feedback from audiences, with Disney hoping it will endure on the big screen.

The film cost $150 million to produce and a significant global marketing spend. However, Universal’s “How to Train Your Dragon” dominated the international charts, earning $53.5 million from 81 markets in its sophomore outing. The live-action remake has grossed $197 million overseas and $385 million globally after two weekends of release.

Sony’s zombie adventure “28 Years Later” took second place, capturing $30 million from 59 markets in its first weekend. The film, which is the sequel to the “28 Days Later” franchise, cost $60 million and will soon become the highest-grossing installment in the series. Meanwhile, Disney’s live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch” continues to soar, earning $523.6 million overseas and a blockbuster $910 million globally after five weekends.

It appears that “Lilo & Stitch” is on track to become the year’s first billion-dollar release. The success of these films suggests that there is still life in the animated genre, even if “Elio” does not meet expectations.
