Pixar’s ‘Elio’ Explores Belonging in the Cosmos

Pixar’s new animated film “Elio” hits theaters this Friday, June 20, taking audiences on a wondrous sci-fi epic journey to explore the human need for belonging and connection. The story follows Yonas Kibreab, an orphan who finds friendship and acceptance among the stars.

As Elio grows up, his curiosity about extraterrestrial life is sparked by the Voyager Golden Records, a message in a bottle humanity sent into space decades ago. With the help of his aunt Olga, a satellite terminal major who once dreamed of becoming an astronaut, Elio travels through galaxies to reach the communiverse, a gathering place for dignitaries from countless planets.

The film’s production design is intricately thought out, with fantastical yet intuitive elements that feel like hands-on exhibits at a children’s museum. The movie also delivers an astute sense of humor and clever nods to science fiction and horror genres.

Conflict arises when Elio volunteers to negotiate with Lord Grigon, a fearsome warlord who must prove his usefulness to his newfound comrades. Along the way, he meets Glordon, a miniature version of a Dune sandworm who connects with him over their desire for emotional softness and acceptance.

As the adventure unfolds, Sagan’s voice reminds us that it’s only human to ponder what’s hiding in space. The film concludes with Elio reexaminining his beliefs about what home can be – a thoughtful exploration of life on Earth and beyond.
