Google’s Pixel Watch 3 is now receiving its most significant update yet, a life-saving feature that detects when the user’s heart has stopped beating. The FDA-cleared Loss of Pulse Detection feature uses infrared LEDs and motion data to track the user’s heartbeat, automatically triggering an alarm and alerting emergency services if the user doesn’t respond.
To activate the feature, users must manually opt-in through the Google Pixel Watch App and select the safety option. If the watch determines the user is unresponsive, it will initiate a countdown and audio alarm before calling for help using LTE or phone connection.
This feature marks a significant improvement over existing watches, which track heartbeats less frequently. The Apple Watch, for example, tracks heart rate every 3-7 minutes by default. Google worked with cardiologists to develop the algorithm, using real-life user data and simulated scenarios to fine-tune the feature.
The rollout began on Tuesday and will take a few weeks to reach all Pixel Watch 3 users. This update demonstrates Google’s commitment to providing advanced safety features in its wearable devices.
