A Japan Airlines Boeing 787 clipped the tail of a parked Delta aircraft at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Wednesday morning, causing minimal disruption to airport operations. The incident occurred while Japan Airlines’ plane was taxiing after landing from Tokyo’s Narita International Airport.
There were no reported injuries among the 172 passengers and 13 crew members onboard the Japan Airlines flight, as well as all 142 passengers on board Delta Air Lines Flight 1921. Response crews worked to move both aircraft off the ramp taxiway.
Delta spokesperson Samantha Moore said the plane was waiting for deicing when another aircraft made contact with its tail. Deicing is a process that occurs before flights begin, where ice is removed from an aircraft’s exterior. The incident occurred on a taxi lane, and airport operations were minimally impacted.
The Federal Aviation Administration will conduct an investigation into the incident, but it did not appear to have caused significant damage or disruption. Passengers reported minor discomfort due to the collision, which occurred when Japan Airlines’ plane jiggled back and forth before coming into contact with the Delta aircraft’s tail.
