Planets Align for Spectacular Winter Sky Show

This month, Jupiter, Mars, and Venus will be visible in the night sky after dark. Saturn is also visible, along with two other planets, Uranus and Neptune. The planets’ alignment occurs when they are on the same plane as the sun’s path through the sky, known as the ecliptic.

To see all the planets together, look west immediately after sunset. You’ll see Venus and Saturn in the western sky, while Jupiter will be visible to the east. However, Mars may appear below Jupiter before it sinks below the horizon due to its proximity to the sun.

In January 2025, six planets – Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Venus, Neptune, and Saturn – will align for a spectacular view in the evening sky on January 21, when the moon reaches its Last Quarter phase. Later, in March 2025, Mercury will join the group, making it visible between Saturn and Venus on March 8. However, Mercury’s appearance is short-lived, as it will sink quickly after emerging.

Clear skies are a must for stargazing enthusiasts, and experts like award-winning reporter Jamie Carter offer valuable insights into the night sky and space exploration.
