Plex has announced its first price increase in over 10 years, effective April 29, which will impact its subscription services and features. The cost of a Plex Pass monthly subscription rises from $5 to $7, while the annual subscription increases from $40 to $70. A lifetime pass now costs $250.
According to Plex’s blog post, the price increase is necessary due to rising costs, enabling the company to invest in developing new features and supporting its users’ personal media needs. Upcoming changes include an integration with Common Sense Media and a new server management app for managing server users.
However, this price change affects one key feature: streaming personal media from outside your network without charging. Starting April 29, this feature will no longer be free, except for Plex Pass subscribers who can access their servers for free. To continue accessing your own content when away or relying on friends with servers, you’ll need a Plex Pass subscription by the end of April.
An alternative option is the Remote Watch Pass, priced at $2 per month or $20 annually, which provides limited features without offline downloads and other perks associated with the standard Plex Pass.
