Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged support to Sri Lanka during its financial crisis, promising help for international cricket matches on the island nation’s east coast.
Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya met with PM Modi in Colombo on Saturday and expressed gratitude for India’s assistance. Jayasuriya requested that India help bring international ground to Jaffna, a region plagued by unrest.
PM Modi replied, “India has always maintained a ‘Neighbourhood First’ approach. We will consider Jayasuriya’s request.” The Indian leader also assured the Sri Lankan cricket team that his government would support their efforts to host international matches in Jaffna.
During his visit to Sri Lanka, PM Modi launched two railway projects worth USD 91.27 million, including a refurbished 128 km railway line and construction of an advanced signalling system. These initiatives are part of India’s development partnership with the island nation.
