Poland’s Conservative Leader Narrows Victory Over Liberal Mayor in Closely Watched Elections

Poland’s conservative leader Karol Nawrocki narrowly won the June election, beating liberal Warsaw mayor Rafał Trzaskowski by a slim margin of 50.89% to 49.11%. The outcome has sparked concerns over voting irregularities and allegations of electoral manipulation.

Trzaskowski’s campaign team, including his chief of staff Wiola Paprocka, has requested an investigation into the results, citing reports of irregularities in polling stations in Kraków and Warsaw. The district electoral commission in Krakow has launched an inquiry after discovering that votes were incorrectly entered into the minutes.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski expressed surprise at the findings, stating that such errors have never occurred before. The National Electoral Commission (PKW) has stated that any irregularities must be reported to the Supreme Court by June 16th.

Opposition politicians from Trzaskowski’s camp and from other parties have also raised concerns about the voting process, citing instances of media bias and irregularities in campaign financing. However, observers from the OSCE office and the Council of Europe described the elections as “professionally and efficiently” conducted, with respect for freedom of expression and association.

The election results saw Karol Nawrocki win the second round by a difference of 369,451 votes or 1.19 percentage points, marking the smallest vote margin between candidates since 1990.
